Would you like to become a happier you? Did you realize that you get to choose how you want to feel?

It’s so easy for us to live in reaction to our circumstances that we often forget about our own happiness. We get lost living on autopilot, meeting our obligations, handling our responsibilities, keeping our commitments and navigating our daily challenges.

We choose what to eat for breakfast, what clothes to wear, who to spend time with and how to schedule our day. Yet, we forget that we can also choose how we want to feel.

Then one day, we realize that we’re not happy, feel unfulfilled and are longing to make a change.

The bottom line is this: you can be held captive by your circumstances or you can choose to create happiness while you’re working to better yourself and your life.

The choice is yours. You can choose to be happier now and start to take simple actions to make that happen.

We design our lives in the day to day by the choices we make and the actions we take.

It all starts with you. You get to decide how you want to design your life and how you want to feel doing it.


With that in mind, here are 12 simple things to do to become a happier you.

Connect with God, Your Higher Power, your Divine Wisdom or the Universe.

Having a spiritual connection or relationship with “something” greater than yourself can give you a sense of peace and a feeling of being cared for in this crazy world. Pause, pray, meditate and listen throughout your day. Ask for guidance and direction and be open to the answers that you receive. 

Fill Yourself Up

Give yourself alone time on a regular basis to feed your own soul. Reconnect with your heart, your intuition and your truth. Make time to quiet all the other voices in your mind and remember what’s important to you. Then, fill yourself back up with love and whatever else you need.

Create Intentions to Guide Your Steps

Get clear on your purpose, heart’s desires, your Why, what matters most and how you want to live. Create your intentions. Write them on a note card and review them daily. Use them as a guide to make decisions for your life. There is great satisfaction in knowing that you can live life by your own design.

Take Care of Your Body

Your body is the home of your soul. Nourish it with whole foods, clean water, fresh air, exercise and your “right” amount of sleep and rest to stay healthy. The healthier your body is, the more energy you have and the stronger you feel. When you feel good and healthy, your life feels better.

Do More of What You Love

We all have so many “To-Do’s” in our lives. It’s important to have just as many “love-to-do’s” for our overall well-being. Write a list of the things that make you come alive and choose to do one every week. Getting lost in the joy of what you love fuels your soul and just makes you feel good.

Create Empowering Rituals and Routines

Anchor your day in rituals and routines. Whether it’s morning intentions, prayer or exercise; or evening readings, journaling or a bath; rituals can help you incorporate your values into your life and give you a sense of meaning. They help you begin and end your day in a positive, life-giving way.

Count Your Blessings and Give Thanks

Gratitude shifts your focus from what is lacking in your life, to the blessings that are already present. It makes you feel more optimistic, helps you see possibilities and gives you hope. Choose ONE thing that you are grateful for each day and meditate on that. Grateful people are happier people.

Spend Time in Good Company

Surround yourself with dreamers, doers, believers, thinkers and those who bring out the best in you. Connecting with others who love and accept you with all your imperfections makes you feel loved and cared for. Choose to be in community for support and to give support.

Keep A Joy Journal

Spend a time at the end of your day or week writing about at least one experience that brought you joy. Be as specific as you can. Paint the picture with words, so you can visualize what you’re describing. This starts to retrain your brain to notice the happy moments in your life instead of the negative ones.

Prioritize & Simplify

Most of us have massive to-do lists and are constantly running around trying to get everything done. We end up living on autopilot, becoming stressed and not enjoying anything. When we prioritize and simplify, it’s easier to enjoy the journey and experience more happiness from the activities we are doing.

Set Soul Goals With Doable Steps

Setting goals that align with your soul are easier to achieve. Break your goals down into simple, doable steps in order to set yourself up for success. It’s important to feel like you’re growing, learning and evolving for the better. We are happier when we can accomplish the things we want.

Give To Others

People who give are more content and experience a greater sense of being connected to others, a greater sense of belonging and a greater sense of fulfillment. Give to others regularly: it could be your time, your help, your shoulder to cry on or in whatever way comes from your heart. It blesses you both.

Remember, you can choose to do things to become a happier you.


Taking small steps toward happiness will energize you and give you the confidence you need to make more profound changes over time.

Make it a habit to love yourself, to inspire yourself and give you what ‘You’ need. When it comes to your overall happiness, you get to decide how to make that happen.

Your life may not be what you want right now, but you can take daily actions to become happier on your journey of changing it. You can design your days with some experiences, relationships and activities that will bring you joy.

There are infinite ways to create happiness and add joy to your world. These are just some ideas to get you started on become a happier you and designing a life where you can thrive.
